Born Cento 1591, Died Bologna 1666. A painter of the Bolognese school who came from Cento. He started as a provincial painter and this early lively naturalistic style owes a great deal to Carracci. In 1620 when a Bolognese Pope was elected he was summoned to Rome and among other works created an altarpiece for St Peter’s. His style gradually changed, influenced by the classical style of Carracci and Domenichino. On his return to Bologna he succeeded Guido Reni as the leading painter of Bologna.
