A Lombard realist who worked from 1720-1750 Ceruti was known in Brescia, where he worked, as il Pitocchetto or ‘the beggar painter’. His realistic works of peasants or low life street people were popular, particularly with his patrons in Brescia, the aristocratic Avogadro family.
