Luca Calevarijs was the first topographical view painter to work in 18th century Venice. Canaletto followed him a generation later. This work executed in the first decade of the 18th century is taken from a slightly raised viewpoint close to the entrance to the Marciana Library. The three arcades of the Doge’s Palace are clearly viewed on the left and on the right of the divided canvas are scenes of everyday life as porters unload moored vessels.
