Clarissa is a candid image of a seated woman. A critic for The Times, in December 1911, observed that this nude, as well as others by Gilman that were included in the Camden Town Group exhibition that year ‘look as if they were sitting to be painted, not as if the artist had surprised them at some characteristic moment’.
