These two small paintings, companion pieces, reveal the influence of Dutch landscape painting which Ricci would have seen on his trip to the Netherlands in 1708. They were made after his return from a long stay in England. The bucolic serenity of the images combined with the figure of the traveller moving through the scene to a distant religious centre can be read as an allegory of Christian fulfilment.
