Diana and the nymphs
[Diana e Atteone]
c 1725
Oil on canvas
147 x 197.5 cm  [HxW]
Museo Civico Palazzo Chiericati, Vicenza

This light hearted image of Diana the Greek goddess surrounded by her nymphs is typical of the work of Giambattista Pittoni, who was painting in Venice during the first half of the 18th century. The darker side of the story, Acteon being devoured by his dogs as a result of observing Diana bathing, takes place in the far distance.
