OVERVIEW OF THE ROLES
The National Gallery’s Capital Works Taskforce was established in 2021 to lead the delivery of the Gallery’s significant capital works program which includes the delivery of over $100 million in capital asset upgrade projects, the establishment of a planned sustainable asset management program for the future, and the delivery of significant or iconic capital works projects.
The Capital Works team is responsible for providing project management leadership for the delivery of complex, high profile and strategically significant capital works projects. These projects are varied in scope with a focus on positioning the National Gallery as a leading contemporary cultural institution for the future.
Current projects include:
- A major sculptural commission by artist Lindy Lee to celebrate the National Gallery’s 40th anniversary
- The sculpture garden revitalisation
- Development of a new internal café
- A modernisation program across the National Gallery facilities including office fit-out and front-of-house refurbishments
- Oversight and planning of the National Gallery’s Strategic Asset Management Plan
- An integrated capital works program of building engineering services and building fabric upgrades
- A significant LED lighting replacement project
- Overseeing the implementation of the Gallery’s Environmental Sustainability Action Plan
- Other strategic projects that may be included in the program.
The Capital Works Taskforce is led by the Taskforce Project Director who has responsibility for:
- Strategic Projects
- Capital Works
- Strategic Asset Management Planning
- Facility Management
- Security Services
The Taskforce is committed to meeting the Gallery’s commitments to the:
- Reconciliation Action Plan
- Disability Inclusion Action Plan
- Gender Equity Action Plan
- Environmental Sustainability Action Plan for which the Taskforce is the lead department.
The National Gallery is seeking applications from highly motivated candidates to, under limited direction and in line with corporate objectives, apply high-level infrastructure project and contract management, and procurement skills to deliver key capital works initiatives.
The roles required to deliver these initiatives include the following:
Head of Capital Works
You will manage a small team of project delivery personnel to deliver key capital works initiatives including, but not limited to, high-profile and critical projects at the National Gallery Facilities. The Head of Capital Works will oversee:
- The delivery of the Lindy Lee sculpture commission and associated landscape works
- The Sculpture Garden revitalisation project
- A new internal hospitality venue – the Oculus Cafe
- Planning for a modernisation of back-of-house spaces including office fit-outs and the repurposing of some front-of-house areas
- Team management including procurement and contract administration activity
Principal Project Manager – Integrated Capital Works Program
You will manage a small team of project delivery personnel to deliver key capital works initiatives including, but not limited to, the delivery of a complex program of capital works referred to as the Integrated Capital Works Program. The Principal Project Manager will oversee:
- The design finalisation of approximately 30 infrastructure projects valued at over $69 million
- Procurement activity for a range of consultants and contractors including the procurement of a design and construct head contractor under a GC21 contract model
- Coordination with other business areas to manage the disruptive impacts of the works on front and back-of-house areas
- Contract administration for relevant contracts including the Head Contractor, legal and probity, cost planning services, commissioning agents and other suppliers as relevant to the delivery of the project.
As a specialist senior leader at the National Gallery, you will be required to inspire, motivate and positively influence individual and team outcomes to deliver a complex program of infrastructure projects across the organisation’s facilities. With the senior leadership and executive teams, you will oversee all stages of infrastructure delivery including Work Health and Safety (WHS) assurance, project planning, design, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
