The curatorial team operates within a vibrant and rewarding environment stewarding and developing the National Gallery’s collection, exhibitions and relationships with art and artists. Reporting to the Head Curator, International Art, the Senior Curator, Provenance leads the National Gallery’s provenance research and ensures appropriate documentation and publication of research related to the provenance of works across the national collection. The position ensures that consistent information standards related to provenance are applied across all curatorial collecting areas.
The Senior Curator, Provenance guides the development of a culture of accountability, transparency and responsibility in relation to issues of provenance as they are related to the national collection and to inward loans. The position works closely with curatorial department heads and the Director to ensure that provenance-related strategies and practices reflecting and prescribing to relevant national and international legislation and frameworks are embedded across the National Gallery. The position manages the development of a culture of provenance research and publication that pays respect to creator communities, especially First Nations cultures, aligns with the vision of the National Gallery and situates the National Gallery internationally as a best-practice institution in relation to the ethical, procedural and operational considerations of provenance.
Finally, the Senior Curator, Provenance is responsible for management and governance of a curatorial team of provenance researchers, including supporting the enabling functions in the area (finance, HR, legal etc) to build team culture and capability.
This position is an ongoing full-time role within our International Art department in our Artistic Programs Portfolio.
