'This is a view I see when I lie on my sofa at night. A round paper Japanese lamp on a small, round, French pear-wood table is reflected in the long window in the corner of the room, as are an identical lamp on a table behind me and the pictures on the wall. The reflection is basically a room within a room, seeing both inside and outside—the black bamboo in the garden is partly visible. After my husband Peter died, I would spend many a solitary night peering into the reflection as I lay with a glass of red wine, so I finally painted the vision.'
