Kitagawa Utamaro
Sogo no Goro Tokimune and Kewaizaka no Shosho

Creation date: c. 1798–99

'In 1985 I won a grant from The Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Trust to study in Tokyo at the Yoshida Hanga Academy. There I was taught the traditional Japanese woodblock-printing technique by the grandson of National Treasure Tōshi Yoshida. I still preferred my own method of using one block and painting with a paintbrush, rather than using a scrubbing brush to ink multiple blocks.

Creating a picture is like making a scientific experiment or a recipe—you’ve got to keep moving things around or putting different ingredients together until the eye is completely satisfied.'
