'I’m not what you’d call a botanic artist, but I draw plants pretty precisely. I think they’re like poems, really.'
—Cressida Campbell
Within Campbell’s home, arrangements of garden cuttings and florist flowers are given equal attention. Cut flowers and greenery are placed in clear glass containers to reveal the linework of stems and new roots. The artist may fill the frame with a single species, play with scale to heighten our attention to detail, or bring plant varieties together to emphasise the shape and colour of blossoms and foliage.
Along with her floral still-life subjects, Campbell also depicts outdoor encounters with nature in vegetable patches and formal gardens. Distinctive botanical details are emphasised in cropped compositions or when placed against dramatic backgrounds.
