Jeffery Smart

The arid landscape, deserted gazebo and lone tree of Jeffrey Smart’s Holiday resort are not the images we would typically associate with a tourist getaway. The highly constructed composition with abandoned pram, a seated man and even the scattered stones, gives the appearance of a stage set. Depth is indicated only through a single string of lights trailing into the distance. The earth and sky seem stacked one above the other as flattened, formal planes rather than separate receding spaces.
