Jeffery Smart

There are visual links between the cursive tubes in The plastic tube, Smart’s portrait of David Malouf, and The sculptor with work in situ. In The sculptor with work in situ Smart humorously critiques contemporary art movements such as abstraction, as well as his own claims that his works were principally about abstract shapes. Here, organic looping lines have taken the place of grand, monumental statuary, creating an energised drawing against the sky.
