In remote Indigenous communities, footy is a really important part of life in community.
We ride the highs and lows with our local team, the Indulkana Tigers – sport brings us together.
Painting is like sport – sometimes it feels like getting in the boxing ring, battling against the paint, the canvas and the subject matter.
But like any sport, you can practice and train your body, train your mind and use it to make you a better person.
Like art, sport is an opportunity - a chance for Indigenous people to elevate themself and find success and recognition. This also offers an opportunity for Indigenous people to use their status and their voice to inspire others - to level the playing field and to fight for a better future. As a youngfella, I loved seing the Aboriginal players running onto the field in the AFL. They were my heroes, and I wanted to be like them. I hope there's kids out there today picking up paintbrushes and going into battle with the paint and canvas, wanting to be like me, Vincent.
