Art Steps is a series of creative making activities produced for children by artists to enjoy with family and friends.
In this Art Steps, Nicole Barakat celebrates the stories told by women through quilt making featured in the exhibition A Century of Quilts.
Nicole invites children and their families to play, experiment and tell stories through textiles.
This activity is designed for children aged 5 to 12, but younger siblings are welcome to join. All children must be accompanied by a parent/carer.
What to bring:
Children are encouraged to bring along fabric or old clothes to include in their stories and artworks. Light-weight and light-colour fabrics are ideal.
About the artist:
Nicole Barakat is a Kfarsghabi, Lebanese artist living on the lands and waters of the Gadigal People. Her artwork engages unconventional approaches to artmaking, creating intricate works that embody the love and patience characteristic of traditional textile practices. Her works include hand-stitched and hand-cut cloth and paper drawings, sculptural forms made with her own hair, cloth and plant materials as well as live work where she uses her voice as a material.
A Century of Quilts is on display at the National Gallery, 16 Mar – 25 Aug 2024.
