Micheline Ford on A Century of Quilts
Duration: 45 min including Q&A
Join Micheline Ford (Senior Conservator, Textiles) to learn about the conservation of quilts housed in the national collection. Micheline will reveal hidden details discovered during conservation treatments and show how the quilts are prepared for display and storage.
Micheline will also highlight the materials and techniques used in these exceptional examples of nineteenth-and early twentieth-century quilts, made almost exclusively by women. The quilts in the exhibition demonstrate techniques including crazy quilting, hexagonal, log cabin and tumbling block piecing, embroidery and appliqué. Many reuse materials sourced from around the home, reflecting the social context in which the artists lived.
A Century of Quilts is on display at the National Gallery, 16 Mar – 25 Aug 2024.
