Elise Blumann was one of Western Australia’s leading modernist artists. Born and trained in Germany, she came to Perth in 1938 as a refugee and, influenced by German Expressionism, her work appeared bold and unconventional in the 1940s. In this painting, using dynamic and expressive brushstrokes, Blumann captured the force of a wild Indian Ocean storm buffeting trees near her home on the banks of the Swan River.
