Curator Kelli Cole (Warumungu/Luritja people) discusses First Nations artists in the exhibition Know My Name: Australian Women Artists 1900 to Now.
When Emily Kame Kngwarreye (Anmatyerre people) emerged as a powerful voice in the 1990s there was great optimism for her practice that transcended traditional boundaries and broke new ground for First Nations women artists. This year, Betty Muffler (Pitjantjatjara people) featured on the cover of Vogue Australia as a part of a global campaign for hope in the age of Coronavirus with her painting Ngangkari Ngura (Healing Country) (2020). In this accessible livestream, Cole discusses hope, beauty and strength in the practices of First Nations women artists included in the exhibition Know My Name: Australian Women Artists 1900 to Now.
Kelli Cole is Curator, Special Projects, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art.
