Canaletto immortalised the architecture of Venice for wealthy Englishmen on ‘the grand tour’, elevating the town-scape to high art. He probably used a camera obscura (a box with lens and a mirror to reflect an image onto ground glass). Although his light-filled scene is rendered in great detail, he used ‘artistic licence’ to extend the length of the building.
