'Peter and I stayed with my mother in this 1950s hotel in Newcastle where the rooms had the most spectacular view over the sea. The walkway between the rooms and the lift also had a fabulous view of the bay and a bus terminal, a combination of urban and industrial that was a really great composition. Mum and I went back and stayed a few nights and I sat on that walkway and did the drawing straight onto two long blocks.

I looked at the two blocks again in 2008. While the print of Newcastle worked well, the woodblock itself looked too heavy. Because I hadn’t looked at it for ages, I saw different compositions in it, so I sawed the blocks up. That’s what’s always interesting about editing—you can see punchy compositions that you may not have seen when first composing the picture. Particularly a panorama.'
