Overview of the role
The role of Operations and Maintenance Technician will operate and maintain Jordan Wolfson’s Body Sculpture robotic work of art during its world premiere exhibition.
The Operations and Maintenance Technician will report directly to the Senior Operations and Maintenance Technician who will provide on-the-job training prior to opening and continued support during the exhibit. The training will teach the junior technician how to operate this highly specialised robotic work of art. Once the junior technician passes the internal certification process, they will gain the title Operations and Maintenance Technician and join a close-knit team of eight technicians to assume more responsibility during the display period and performance cycle of Body Sculpture. The Operations and Maintenance Technician will bear witness to innovative technology while playing an intrinsic role in the presentation, care, and operations of the National Gallery of Australia’s first robotic work of art.
The Operations and Maintenance Technician will undertake daily routine checks on the motion control systems, safety and kill-switch systems and the mechanical and robotic components to ensure optimal performance and prevent unplanned downtime; they will provide clear feedback of the status of all systems to ensure the work of art can maintain the schedule of performance.
The training and orientation period will begin in November 2023 in preparation for the opening week beginning 4 December 2023, the exhibition will run until 28 April 2024. During the exhibition period The Gallery is open every day of the year (except Christmas Day) and technicians will be expected to work a set roster including weekdays and weekends. There will be an opportunity for successful candidates to agree to hours (10–35hrs per week).
This position is responsible for the maintenance and operation of Body Sculpture by artist Jordan Wolfson.
This position of Operations and Maintenance Technician is a non-ongoing, part time role within the Exhibitions team and reports to the Exhibitions Manager.
An order of merit may be established from this selection process and may be used to fill future identical vacancies over the next 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only.
