Anne Dangar: Pottery Demonstration
with Canberra Potters
Free, bookings essential
Duration: 90 minutes including Q&A
Join Rebecca Edwards, Curator, Australian Art, and ceramic artists Maricelle Olivier and Joey Burns at Canberra Potters for a unique opportunity to see how Australian artist, Anne Dangar (1885–1951), created her ceramic works.
Dangar was one of the first Australian artists to engage directly with European modernism and she developed a lifelong commitment to Cubism. In 1930, she travelled to Moly-Sabata in Sablons in southern France, an artist colony established by the French cubist painter Albert Gleizes. She remained there permanently until her death in 1951, establishing her own pottery and using traditional methods to produce vessels that she decorated with bold, abstract designs.
Maricelle and Joey will demonstrate each stage of creating pottery using Anne Dangar’s process and techniques. The demonstration will take you through Dangar’s making process from sketching the form, throwing on the pottery-wheel, trimming, surface decoration techniques, glazing and firing.
Anne Dangar is on display at the National Gallery from 7 Dec 2024 – 27 Apr 2025.
This program is presented in partnership with Canberra Potters.
Maricelle Olivier is a South African ceramic artist based in Kamberri/Canberra. Drawing inspiration from the safari lands of South Africa’s Kruger National Park, Masicelle meticulously draws and etches each line individually on her work, creating a visually dynamic surface of interpretations and abstractions of the safari landscape.
In 2018, Maricelle completed a Masters of Fine Arts in Ceramics at the National Art School. She has participated in many group exhibitions around Australia, most recently in the Australasian Art Fair Sydney Contemporary and the major exhibition Clay Dynasty at the Powerhouse Museum.
Maricelle is a teacher at the Canberra Potters Society. She was the Ceramic Studio Manager at Ernabella Arts Centre from 2019 until 2021. Maricelle is represented by Sabbia Gallery in Sydney and Beaver Galleries in Canberra.
Joey Burns (Sawpit Studios) is a potter based near Gundaroo, New South Wales. His primary interest is in finding the balance between the functionality and aesthetic qualities of tableware. He first trained in a production factory making tableware before deciding to study ceramics. He received his Diploma of Ceramics from Northern Beaches TAFE Sydney. He has also worked as a ceramics technical assistant at the Ernabella Art Centre. He now works from his home studio making functional pottery and teaches at Canberra Potters.
