Artist Archives: Ellen Newton on Anne Dangar
Delve into the National Gallery’s archives facilitated by Ellen Newton, Library and Archives Assistant, for a talk focused on the papers of Anne Dangar (1885-1951), one of Australia’s most important, yet underacknowledged modern artists.
The National Gallery Research Library and Archives holds an extensive archive on Anne Dangar. Over the past two years, Ellen has worked closely with this archive to rehouse the papers and develop finding aids to enhance the archive’s discoverability for exhibition and research.
During the talk, audiences will have the unique opportunity to view the Anne Dangar papers, including a series of letters from and to the artist while she lived and worked at the artist community Moly-Sabata in France. These letters reflect Dangar’s involvement in the Cubist movement and life in rural France during pre- and post-World War II.
Ellen will share some of the history of Dangar’s life and practice revealed by the archives, as well as behind the scenes insights into her work preserving and preparing the archive for future research.
Friday Art Talks is a free weekly program. Hear from artists, curators and experts on the works in our collection and exhibition program.
This talk is part of a series focused on the major exhibitions Ethel Carrick and Anne Dangar on display until the 27 April 2025.
