NAIDOC Week
Join contemporary artist, r e a (Gamilaraay/Wailwan/Biripi peoples) to learn more about their practice and the series, Definitions of Difference I-VI (1994) currently on display in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Galleries.
Definitions of Difference I-VI (1994), explores the lives of young Indigenous women who were stolen and forced into a life of servitude.
r e a is an artist, curator, activist and academic and cultural educator. Their work draws on their lived experiences and the impact of intergenerational trauma, grief and loss. As Genevieve Grieves writes, r e a “is a black, queer, truth‑teller who pushes boundaries across representation and thought, whether it be in academic or creative form.”
NAIDOC Week celebrates and recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. The theme for 2023 is For Our Elders.
