Join National Gallery Director, Dr Nick Mitzevich and Gallery curators for an exciting evening of art and ideas, as they share their exhibition highlights and new acquisitions from the Gallery’s 2023 artistic program, including the recently announced Winter exhibition Ngura Pulka – Epic Country.

Bruce Johnson McLean is a member of the Wierdi peoole of the Birri Gubba Nation of Wripbid (Central Queensland). Bruce is the Barbara Jean Humphreys Assistant Director, First Nations Engagement and joined the National Gallery in 2020. He was formerly Curator of Indigenous Australian Art at the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) in Brisbane. While at QAGOMA, Bruce curated several exhibitions including Mavis Ngallametta: Show Me the Way to Go Home; I, Object; Tony Albert: Visible; My Country, I Still Call Australia Home: Contemporary Art from Black Australia. In 2016, he curated the first major retrospective dedicated to the work of Sally Gabori, Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori: Dulka Warngiid – Land Of All. He was also part of the curatorial team for the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in 2018, 2011 and 2003. In 2002, Bruce McLean received the NAIDOC award in the National Aboriginal Youth of the Year category, conferred to Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals during the annual national celebration of their history, culture and achievements.
Kelli Cole is a Warumunga and Luritja woman from central Australia and is Curator of Special Projects at the National Gallery. Since her commencement in 2007 she has worked on many major projects, including all four National Indigenous Art Triennials and was instrumental in the development of the National Gallery’s First Nations art galleries in 2010. She worked closely alongside Hetti Perkins as part of the curatorial team for the 4th National Indigenous Art Triennial: Ceremony, 2021.
Russell Storer is Head Curator, International Art, at the National Gallery. He was formerly Director (Curatorial, Research and Exhibitions) at National Gallery Singapore, where he co-curated exhibitions including Minimalism: Space. Light. Object., Yayoi Kusama: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow, and Between Worlds: Raden Saleh & Juan Luna. He previously held curatorial positions at QAGOMA in Brisbane, where he co-curated the 6th, 7th, and 8th Asia Pacific Triennials, and at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, where he developed exhibitions with artists including Simryn Gill, Matthew Ngui, and Juan Davila. He was a co-curator of the 3rd Singapore Biennale in 2011 and has written widely on Asian and Australian contemporary art.
Anne O’Hehir is Curator of Photography, at the National Gallery. She has worked on numerous exhibitions including The Body Electric part of the Know My Name initiative focusing on women’s practice (co-curator (2020-21); Light moves: contemporary Australian video art (curator, 2016), Diane Arbus: American Portraits (curator, 2016), Carol Jerrems: photographic artist (co-curator, 2012) and Colour my world: handcoloured Australian photography (co-curator, 2015). She has written extensively on photography and has a particular interest in the history of women's practice.
