As a backdrop to unravelling the many stories behind Hilda Rix Nicholas’ significant portrait Une Australianne, 1925, Annabel and Alice delve into Rix’s formative early life experiences, the strong friendship bond formed between Hilda Rix Nicholas and Dorothy Richmond, and the ever-effervescent Paris scene of the 1920s.
Annabel McGowan was the recipient of the Janet Wilkie Memorial Prize 2022, ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences. Her Honours thesis, ‘An Alternative Vision: Modernism, Gender, and National Identity in Hilda Rix Nicholas’ Australian Paintings 1918–1948,’ was supervised by Dr Sarah Scott.
