Rochelle Haley on A Sun Dance
Rochelle Haley is an artist who works across painting and choreography to explore relationships between moving bodies and physical environments. Working with dancers, her painting, installation and performance works explore intersections between colour, gesture and light, discovering harmonies between audiences, performers and architectures.
In this video, Haley introduces A Sun Dance, a choreographic performance commissioned by the National Gallery that explores the relationship between dancer, sunlight and architecture. Haley describes how the geometric qualities of the National Gallery building informed the development of the work, the inspiration she found within architect Colin Madigan’s archive and how the elements of light, shade and a sense of place are expressed through dance, music and costume.
