Contemporary Australian Architects Speaker Series 2022 program announced
The pressing need for well-designed homes to elevate the health and well-being of Australian communities amid the climate crisis will be front and centre of a national architecture series throughout September.
In its 27th year at the National Gallery of Australia, the Contemporary Australian Architects Speaker Series tackles issues facing the community, architects, and the architecture profession, giving the public an opportunity to hear from and question renowned Australian architects.
National Gallery Director Dr Nick Mitzevich welcomed the opportunity to continue the partnership with the Australian Institute of Architects and to provide design enthusiasts with the opportunity to take part in inspiring conversations about art and architecture.
‘Australians recognise the importance and impact of high-quality design on our built environment,’ he said.
‘Architecture and art accelerate cultural transformation and we are proud to host this innovative series within the walls of our building, which remains a key touchpoint in the development of Australia’s architectural history,’ Dr Mitzevich said.
The Contemporary Australian Architects Speaker Series is one of the key events leading up to the National Gallery’s 40th anniversary in October when new collection displays and exhibitions will be celebrated as well as the Gallery’s iconic building designed by architect Colin Madigan AO.
Australian Institute of Architects ACT Chapter President Jane Cassidy said architects were uniquely placed to be the game-changers with regards to climate change.
‘Through architecture we have the capacity to deliver a more socially equitable, sustainable and healthier community,” she said. “The architects in this series have all worked to create spaces that achieve these outcomes. I look forward to hearing their insights on a design-led future which benefits everyone.’
This year’s speakers are from Darwin, Perth, Sydney, and Melbourne. Kate Fitzgerald from Whispering Smith in Perth will kick off the Series. Whispering Smith is a staunchly feminist residential architecture practice and medium-density housing leader in Perth. They are champions for millennial housing, sustainable design and friendly minimalist architecture, and are renowned vocal advocates for gender equality.
