Duration: 60 mins including Q&A
Join Rebecca Edwards, Curator, Australian Art, for a talk to celebrate the opening of Anne Dangar, the first major survey exhibition of this renowned modernist artist to be presented in Australia.
Anne Dangar (1885–1951) was one of Australia’s most important modern artists. During the first decades of the twentieth century, Dangar was one of the few Australian artists to engage directly with advancements in European modernism and developed a lifelong commitment to Cubism. In 1930, she travelled to Moly-Sabata in Sablons, southern France, an artist colony established by the French cubist painter Albert Gleizes. She formed an integral part of the Sablons community and remained there permanently until her death in 1951, establishing her own pottery and using traditional methods to produce vessels decorated with bold, abstract designs.
Rebecca will take you behind the scenes of the exhibition’s development, sharing discoveries from her research trip to Moly-Sabata, as well as archival material drawn from the expansive Anne Dangar papers, acquired by the National Gallery in 2012. Her talk will consider Dangar’s pivotal role in the development of Cubism in Australia.
Anne Dangar is on display at the National Gallery from 7 Dec 2024 – 27 Apr 2025.
This talk will be Auslan interpreted. Contact access@nga.gov.au or +61 2 6240 6632 for further information or assistance.
