Saturday Screening

Movie still of a man in a suit wearing sunglasses
At the Gallery
Sat 8 Jan 2022, 2pm
No performances scheduled

Join us in the James Fairfax Theatre for a free film screening of 8½ (1963) by director Federico Fellini, presented in partnership with the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.

An avid reader and film buff, Jeffrey Smart layered his paintings with references to cinema, literature, art and other artists. The results are potent and intriguing images that have become emblematic of 20th and 21st century urban experience.

8½ (1963) by director Federico Fellini is considered as an influential classic. The film follows Guido Anselmi, a famous Italian film director, who suffers from ‘director's block’. Highly self-reflexive and potentially autobiographical, the film addresses the alienating effects of modernisation.

Rated PG, 2 hrs 18 min.

Can't make it to Canberra? Register before 12noon Friday 7 January to receive a viewing link to watch the film online over the weekend.
