Join contemporary artist, Janet Fieldhouse (Kalaw Lagaw Ya/Meriam Mir peoples) to learn more about her sculptural practice. Inspired by her matrilineal connections to the Zenadth Kes/Torres Strait Islander communities, Janet Fieldhouse is known for her usually intricate and small-scale sculptures which depict the elasticity in nature.
In this special floor talk for the Zenadth Kes/Torres Strait Island community celebration the ‘Coming of the Light’, Janet will speak about her practice and the ceramic works, Skin Deep Journey (2019), Hybrid Coconut Scraper Canoe Series 1 (2019), and Hybrid Gathering Tools (2019), currently on display in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Galleries.
Torres Strait Island people celebrate the 'Coming of the Light' on the 1 July annually. The holiday commemorates the date Christianity came to the Zenadth Kes/Torres Strait Islands and is a public holiday there. This talk is also part of the National Gallery’s NAIDOC week program.
NAIDOC Week celebrates and recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. The theme for 2023 is For Our Elders.
