About
Know My Name: Global presents works of art by living women artists who have pushed the limits of artistic practice through experimentation with form, colour and spatial innovation from the 1960s to the present day.
Bringing together recent acquisitions alongside key works drawn from the International and Australian collections, Know My Name: Global situates work by Australian artists within global art history.
Colour ricochets between works in the space, deployed for formalist and conceptual concerns, as well as strategies of activism, disruption and shock. Other works act in dialogue with the brutalist architecture of the National Gallery building. This display features the new acquisition Rainbow Pickett by prominent feminist artist Judy Chicago; the politically provocative text-based installation Inflammatory essays by Jenny Holzer; and paintings by Vivienne Binns, a pioneer of feminist practice in Australia.
Know My Name: Global is a Know My Name project, the National Gallery initiative celebrating the work of all women artists to enhance understanding of their contribution to Australia’s cultural life.
Curators: Deirdre Cannon, Assistant Curator, Australian Art; Amelia Brown, Curatorial Assistant, International Art and Vy Tsan, former Curatorial Assistant, International Art.
