Join Kate Symons from Studio Ilk for the third lecture in the 2023 Contemporary Australian Architects Speakers Series.

Studio Ilk is a small, ambitious practice working on a broad range of project typologies, from small-scale residential alterations with heritage focus to large commercial and landscape driven works.

They pride themselves on producing truly unique responses to each project, site and client and as a team, share a common connection to place in lutruwita/Tasmania. Always seeking to understand the individuals behind the brief. The approach is continually evolving and is informed by deep connection of personal and professional relationships, people, place and the greater social context in which they practice. This empowers them to enrich their clients’ experience by responding with beautiful, purposeful built outcomes.

Kate spent her formative architectural training working closely alongside her long-time mentor - local award winning, and well-respected architect, Maria Gigney.

Although stepping back from the directorship in 2016, Maria and the team at Studio Ilk continue to work collectively on a number of larger commercial and residential ventures, both in Tasmania and interstate. Their work has been widely published across a broad range of medium both in Australia and overseas.

Passionate about improving the path for women in the construction industry, in particular the architectural profession. Within her team, Kate fosters an approach of inclusion and equality, not only in their design approach but also in the day-to-day practice.

Studio Ilk focus on producing highly resolved enduring solutions which perform for their occupants.

For more than two decades the National Gallery has proudly partnered with the Australian Institute of Architects (ACT Chapter) to present the Contemporary Australian Architects Speaker Series. This annual lecture series showcases the latest work of renowned Australian architects.
