Art Together with Marilou Chagnaud

In summer 2022, as part of the Jeffrey Smart public program, the National Gallery invited local artist Marilou Chagnaud to lead a collaborative mural. Her concept was to create a Jeffrey Smart painting that you could step into. Titled Double Movement, the urban setting of the National Gallery building provided a backdrop for a geometric mural that’s pattern was derived from urban signage. 100 participants worked alongside the artist to paint the mural onto the pavement on the Parkes Place East at the side of the National Gallery.

The mural remained on temporary display for a couple of weeks. Many participants returned to see the finished work and to share what they had contributed to with family and friends. Members of the public also enjoyed stumbling across it. As Canberra was still just emerging from pandemic lockdowns, this project was a joyful reminder of the importance of community and creativity to our wellbeing.

“It was lovely to be able to join in this experience with people who were so passionate about art and were excited to share their knowledge with the kids.”

“The staff were tremendous. Really fun event and a great hands on way for little ones to get a taste of enjoying and contributing to public art. Thank you and the NGA staff and volunteers for all that you do!”

“We are heading back this weekend to see the finished project. Many thanks for providing opportunities for kids to get involved and appreciate what is involved behind the picture.”
